A few hours before the UVA Cavaliers Wrestling squad took to the mat, Culpeper Team Cobra marked their arrival at Memorial Gym in Charlottesville, VA, by soundly defeating their host the Cavalier Wrestling Club 89-25. The impressive victory improved Team Cobra’s mark to 7-0 atop the Central Virginia Wrestling League.
Team Cobra opened up the event with a close 9-6 contest won by Jamal Robinson, with Robinson securing the win in the final period with a takedown and a near fall. The momentum increased with Team Cobra’s supremacy on the mat with pinfalls by Logan Brown, Dillon Werth, Drew Shurina,
Cody Howard, Savannah Jenkins, Jeremy Yates, Zachary Brown,
Yarhoski Aldiva, Bret Shurina, Parker Utley, Logan Shurina & Austin Jenkins.
Brett Blankenship sealed the victory for Team Cobra, as well as gaining a bit of vengeance for an earlier loss, by defeating Wade Kammauff 3-2. Earlier in the middle school season Blankenship, who also wrestles for Floyd T. Binns Middle School, had fallen in the Prospect Heights Middle School Tournament Championship Match to Kammauff of Buford Middle School 3-4. However, encouraged by his teammates’ earlier dominance and vocal support, Blankenship broke a tied score in the third period with an escape to clinch the victory.
The Central Virginia Wrestling League features youth wrestling teams from across the Piedmont Virginia area that compete head on in dual format by age and weight classes from Kindergarten through Middle School. One more weekend of competition remains in the inaugural season. This Saturday morning Team Cobra hosts Madison, the Riverhead Gladiators and Buffalo Gap at Culpeper Christian School. The season will conclude on Sunday, 1 March 2009, with a CVWL Championship Tournament at University Hall in Charlottesville, VA.
